2014 Gerard Raphet Gevrey Chambertin 'Clos de Beze' Grand Cru

Avg. Rating:
(0)

Raphet's Chambertin Clos de Beze is a treasure, pure and simple. Composed primarily of vines planted prior to World War I, only a barrel or two is produced every year. The 2014 wine shimmers with black raspberry, black tea, gamy, meaty scents, red roses, and black cherries. Succulent, fine, and long, this is the kind of soul-satisfying Pinot Noir we would pick to drink for our last meal on earth.

Gérard Raphet is a man of few words. In nearly an hour’s visit to his cellar, he rarely spoke more than a few sentences at a time. In fairness, he doesn’t have to explain anything once the wine starts being extracted from barrel. He merely fills the glasses and slyly smiles as the murmur grows among the group. His wares are Burgundy, through and through.

Crafting an astounding array of Pinot Noir, Gérard focuses his intensity and brilliant winemaking exclusively on the most fickle of grapes. His longstanding local connections afford him access to choice, old-vine parcels of some of Burgundy’s best known vineyards, a huge advantage for a small producer. The focus and purity that Raphet wines display on the palate are the direct result of these stellar sources. They are regularly critical favorites, so we suggest you get them before the media does.
