2012 Roy Estate Proprietary Red Napa Valley
More From Roy Estate:
"Roy is one of the best producers in Napa that you've never heard of. The 2012 Roy Estate Proprietary Red wine could stand toe to toe with bottles twice its price point any day of the week. Stunning Stuff." - John Holbrooks, Senior Wine Scout
At 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, this could still legally be labeled as such, but the plushness of the 13% Merlot and bright red fruit of 10% Petit Verdot make this distinct from the Cabernet bottling. Parker adored its "opaque purple color, full body, supple tannins, and sweet blueberry and blackberry liqueur notes intermixed with hints of chocolate as well as dusty, earthy, forest floor notes." Fire up the Weber and prep that flatiron!

The wine business has a funny way of drawing people in, even those with no intention of getting into the game. Just ask Charles and Shirley Roy. Their goal of a hobby vineyard on their property in Napa was flipped on its head by a visit from famed consultant Helen Turley. She convinced the Roys that they had some very special earth (rock would be more appropriate) on their hands, and that merely selling their fruit would be a travesty. So the shackles of sanity came off and the planting started in earnest. Thus began the birth of Roy Estate as a top-flight producer and the death of any notion of retirement. With the help of gifted winemaker Philippe Melka (Bryant Family, Vineyard 29, Marston, Gemstone, Seavey…) the Roys have come screaming out of the gate with two phenomenal wines. Philippe’s uncanny eye for vineyard potential is showcased in their first releases, highlighting the “two faces” of the property. Robert Parker heaped ample praise on the project, and our hopelessly jaded tasting panel gave it the raised eyebrow seal of approval. Based on what we tasted, this is among the most exciting new Napa projects we have encountered in some time. Fans of superlative red wines will want to keep a close eye on this producer.About Roy Estate
