2014 Robert Stemmler Chardonnay Carneros

Avg. Rating:
 2014 Robert Stemmler Chardonnay Carneros

Robert Stemmler retired from full-time winemaking in 1989, and today, his close friends, the Racke family, operate the Robert Stemmler label. Anne Moller-Racke makes this Chardonnay sourced from Donum's Estate vineyard, as well as two neighboring vineyards in the cool Carneros region. The bulk of the blend is fermented in stainless steel, which preserves freshness and fruit, and gives the wine lift. The remainder of the blend is fermented in French oak barrels, mostly several years old, with just a few new barrels in the mix. This is a phenomenal Chardonnay value!

After making wine in his native Germany, Robert Stemmler jumped the pond and landed in the Napa Valley in 1961. He worked with the Mondavi's at Charles Krug Winery then became winemaker at Sonoma's historic Simi Winery. The lifelong winemaker wasn't satisfied to make only wine for other people, so in 1976 he opened his own shop. In 1982 he released his very first Pinot Noir and got the wine world buzzing with great acclaim. Around the same time, fellow ex-pat Anne Moller-Racke arrived from Germany to work at the nearby Buena Vista Winery. In short order they became friends and when Robert was ready to retire in 1989 the Racke family purchased his label and produced it at their newly minted The Donum Estate - their Carneros headquarters, AKA the "ultimate Pinot Noir project." Today Stemmler wines are Donum's compendium brand, sharing the same pristine estate grown fruit and uncompromising commitment to quality.
