2013 Smithereens Red El Dorado
Scottish gold miner James Skinner founded the J. Skinner Native Wine and Brandy Company in 1861 in Rescue, CA. He was an early pioneer in El Dorado County as well as one of the first and most successful early winemakers and distillers in the history of California. Over a century later, in 2006, Mike & Carey Skinner and their three children bought property a mile or so from the original Skinner homestead.
It was there that Skinner Winery was re-established, and Mike and Carey started developing their dream of resurrecting a little family history. The Skinners immediately brought winemaker Chris Pittenger-formerly with Williams-Selyem and Marcassin in Sonoma-on board the same year. They worked closely with Chris in planning the new Skinner Vineyards and Winery operation. They also bought James Skinner's century-old stone cellar, and in the rolling vineyards around old Skinners CA, they planted what Mike and Carey call the Legacy Grapes - James' original varieties, including Mission, Zinfandel, Trousseau, Grenache, Carignane and the Skinner clone of Petit Bouschet, all headed for modern and refined winemaking.
