Dr. Crane Vineyard is on the west side of Saint Helena, adjacent to Sulphur Springs Creek and a gravel plant that abuts it. So naturally this vineyard renders minerally, gravelly perpetrators, combined with aromas of perfectly ripened Cabernet fruit. This vineyard’s hallmark is dried red and black fruit; you’ll also find notes like cassis, blueberries, and dark black cherries with touches of grenadine and dusty ancho chiles.
Here’s a fascinating way to explore the hot, alluvial, very special vineyard in St. Helena as rendered by Jean Hoefliger over the course of three vintages. This pack includes one bottle each of the following wines:
• 2010 The Debate Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard St. Helena [CT 93+]
• 2011 The Debate Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard St. Helena [CT 91]
• 2012 The Debate Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard St. Helena [WA 96]
Though it’s a relatively new project, The Debate has had an audacious debut. This joint venture between Hoefliger and philanthropist and wine lover Rob McKay has received the kind of press in The Wine Advocate that many wineries can only dream about. The duo works closely each year with vineyard impresario Andy Beckstoffer to create three distinct expressions of three of the most iconic Napa Valley terroirs: Dr. Crane in Saint Helena (est’d 1858), Missouri Hopper in Yountville (est’d 1877), and To Kalon in Oakville (est’d 1868).
