Grain-to-glass is becoming a common phrase in the craft spirits world, and we don’t often think of it applying to single malt whiskey, but in this case, it’s quite appropriate. Founded in 2004 by Christian Krogstad, House Spirits is a Portland distillery with a unique take on its whiskey making. Choosing to use local two-row barley and ferment with an exceptional ale yeast known for adding sublime character to the fermentation. Produced in small batches in pot stills, Westward is then matured a minimum of two years in lightly charred new American oak. This spirit is one of those revelations in craft spirits you won’t find every day. It takes time to make a great whiskey and House Spirits has given themselves the opportunity to get it right, and we think you’ll enjoy the result!
A malt whiskey for the bourbon lover, this shows notes of vanilla, oak spice and a touch of brown sugar on the nose. A lithe, expressive palate just begins to tap the surface with cinnamon, dates, figs and sweet malt. A hint of tobacco leaf and lingering oak finishes it off nicely.
