Produced in the tradition of Joseph Magnus' original whiskey back in the pre-Prohibition days, this elixir is blended from straight bourbon finished in three different types of casks: Pedro Ximenez Sherry, Oloroso Sherry, and Cognac. The result is a beautifully layered straight bourbon with notes of fleshy nectarines, Marzipan, caramel and freshly snapped vanilla bean. A rounded soul-warming treat for the bourbon lover.
The whiskey world is an industry with a troubled past yet full of redemption and resurrection stories. Jos. A. Magnus distillery is one of those stories. In 2007 Jimmy Turner found a bit of family history in his mother’s home, a one-hundred year old bottle of his great-grandfather’s bourbon. After some digging, Jimmy began sourcing whiskey from MGP and finishing it in the magic combination of Sherry and Cognac casks to re-create his great-grandfather's elixir. With a new distillery in DC and several awards under their belt already, Jos. A. Magnus is a brand to keep an eye on!
Joseph A. Magnus established his eponymous company in 1892 as a liquor wholesaler in Cincinnati. His success was largely the result of innovative concepts with regard to whiskey and marketing. He used Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez and Cognac casks to finish his bourbons before bottlings, creating a unique flavor profile that the competition couldn’t match. He also offered so-called “freebies” with his whiskeys in the form of branded shot glasses and other bar wares. Unfortunately, like so many others, Prohibition got the better of Mr. Magnus' business and he shuttered by 1918 disappearing from public life.
